Five Places that Serve Coffee Flights in Los Angeles

Pairing Coffee with Coffee

Why choose when you can have it all?! Many of our favorite beverages can already be found in sample-sized glasses on a wooden serving tray. Wine. Beer. Margaritas...

In fact, we don’t think you should ever have to limit yourself to one drink. So why limit yourself to one coffee at a time?

Luckily for us, a number of cafes in LA offer coffee flights so you can have it all and taste coffees in combos you might not have tried otherwise.

We cover five of our favorite SoCal flights.

What to look for in a coffee flight.

The flight is your temporary escape from that every-day cup of joe that helps you get through the day. That means a really good flight needs to be more than the sum of its tiny-coffee-vessel parts

In ascending levels of geek, we think coffee flights should can achieve the following heights:

Level one

At the very basic level it lets us taste the menu, picking-and-choosing from variety of coffees and tastes or not making a choice and just having it all.

Level two

A more advanced flight with a theme and a journey. This coffee flight has a point to make. A flight that uses beans from different countries so each cup takes us on a little field trip. Or maybe a small sampling with roast profiles from light to dark roasts. Different body, acidity levels, and fruity, floral, or nutty undertones. Different brewing techniques - a taste bud debate between a French press, drip, and a vacuum coffee maker sounds quite lovely.

Level three (and our favorite)

Flights that bring together unexpected combos of drinks and flavors you would never have thought about yourself but that somehow just work. The chefs-kiss of the barrista world (*mmmmmwah 🤌).

With that in mind, here are some of our favorites.

Jesse’s Grind Coffee Flight

So, Jesse’s Grind Coffee Bar is a bit further from central Los Angeles. It’s in the Winnetka area (south of Northridge), but if you’re in that area it’s worth diving in for a coffee flight. You can sample 4 of their Latin-inspired flavors in either hot or cold. They have espresso lattes in Abuelita’s hot chocolate, horchata (rice and cinnamon), hazelnut, caramel, and a few others. Or try their drip, cold brew, or cafe de olla (Mexican coffee with spices). This one’s fun and lets you try some flavors you’ve never had in coffee before.

Three Flights at Toasted

Toasted has three different flights. If you want a full java experience grab the coffee flight with cold brew, vanilla latte, and caramel and mocha macchiato.

Are you watching your caffeine intake? Then, the rosewater flight gives you non-caffeinated drinks. It has a floral mix of roseade (rose lemonade), classic rosewater latte, cold brew, and rosewater latte with espresso. For a bit more adventure, ask for their seasonal flight selection.

This one’s still more fun than for the coffee geeks.

The Classic & Chai Flights at Kind Grounds

Kind Grounds is a newer spot on the Westside. Their Classic Flight is made up of the holy trinity of coffees: a cortado, a drip coffee, and a cold brew. They also have a Chai Flight, sporting the holy trinity of chai (?): Honey Chai, Golden Chai (which has Tumeric in it), and Herbal Honey Chai.

The Espresso Flight at Bar Nine

Starting to move our way of the geek-ladder with this one.

Culver City’s Bar Nine began offering coffee flights when Zayde Naquib, Bar Nine’s founder, revised the menu last February. They offer a rotating selection of espressos every day based on their coffee subscription as well as 4 fixed items: Bon Bon, Fruta, Flora, and Decaf. The espresso flight lets you sample three of these options. All beans are sourced from Ethiopia and brewed in batch form without espresso machines, a method called Pure Espresso that was created at Bar Nine.

Business & Pleasure

Our favorite and (by now) an LA classic - the three-part beverage at Downtown LA’s G&B Coffee or any of the Go Get Em Tiger locations. You start with the double business portion, a shot of espresso and a glass of their fizzy hoppy tea. Then, you sip on the liquid pleasure which comes in the form of an almond macadamia cappuccino with house made almond-macadamia milk. It’s shaken with ice and served neat with a dash of espresso powder on top. The baristas-kiss of coffee flights
